Privacy Policy — SmartCopy
Last updated: 2026-07-05
SmartCopy (“the extension”) is a personal snippet and paste manager. This
policy explains what data it handles.
Snippet data — local by default
SmartCopy stores your saved resources — titles, text, formatted text, links, and
images/files (kept as data URLs) — plus your settings (such as the Activate
toggle) locally on your device using the browser’s
chrome.storage API. By default, this data is never transmitted
anywhere. It is only sent off your device if you explicitly create an
account and turn on Cloud Sync — see the section below.
If you never use Cloud Sync, nothing about your snippets ever leaves
your browser.
Cloud Sync (optional account)
SmartCopy can optionally sync your text, formatted-text, and link
snippets across your devices. This requires creating an account,
which is entirely opt-in and off by default.
-
Signing in: you enter your email and receive a
one-time numeric code (no password to create or remember). This is
handled by our authentication provider, Supabase.
-
What gets synced: only text, formatted text,
and link resources you’ve saved — their title, content,
shortcut, and keyword. Images and files are not synced in
the current version and stay local-only, regardless of your sync
setting.
-
How it’s protected: your synced data is stored in a
database scoped to your account only (row-level security — no other
account can read or write it), transmitted over HTTPS, and hosted on
Supabase.
-
Turning it off: signing out stops all syncing
immediately and has no effect on the snippets already saved locally
on your device.
-
Deleting your synced data: contact us (below) to
have your account and synced resources permanently deleted. This is
separate from your local data — see “Your control” below.
Cloud Sync is a distinct, separate system from the one-time onboarding
email described next — signing up for Cloud Sync does not require and
is not related to completing onboarding, and vice versa.
Onboarding — name & email (optional)
The first time you install SmartCopy, you’re shown a one-time welcome screen
asking for your name and email. This step is optional — you can
click “Skip for now” and use the extension without providing anything.
This is unrelated to the Cloud Sync account described above.
If you choose to provide your email here:
-
It is sent securely (HTTPS) to our database, hosted on Supabase, and used only
to send you occasional product updates or support communications.
- It is not sold, shared with third parties, or used for advertising.
-
It is stored separately from your snippet data — your saved resources are
never transmitted, regardless of whether you complete this step.
- You can request deletion of this data at any time by contacting us (below).
Outside of the optional Cloud Sync feature above, this onboarding email
is the only other information SmartCopy ever sends off your device.
What the extension accesses
-
To paste a snippet or collect selected content, SmartCopy reads the page you
are on (the focused field, your text selection, or the image/link you
right-click). This happens only when you trigger an action
(Smart Paste, a shortcut, a keyword click, or Copy to SmartCopy). The accessed
content is used solely to perform that action and, for “Copy to SmartCopy”, to
save it to your local library.
- When collecting an image, it is fetched and stored locally as a data URL.
- None of this browsing/page content is ever sent anywhere — it stays on your device.
What the extension does NOT do
- It does not collect analytics or telemetry.
- It does not track your browsing.
- It does not sell your data or share it with third parties.
- It does not use your data for advertising or to determine creditworthiness.
- It does not contain or load remote code.
Your control
You can view, edit, export, import, or delete all your snippet data at any time
from the extension’s Data Management page. Uninstalling the extension removes
all locally stored data.
If you’ve enabled Cloud Sync: uninstalling the extension
does not delete your synced data from our servers —
your account and its synced resources remain until you sign out (which
stops future syncing) and contact us to request permanent deletion.
To request deletion of onboarding data (name/email) or Cloud Sync
account data from our database, contact us below.
